Nicole Uurbanus
Nicole Uurbanus, holandesa, graduada em Culturas Comparativas pela Sophia University, Japão, se formou em joalheria na Japan Jewelry Academy (1983) em Tóquio. Continuou seus estudos no Brasil e abriu atelier em São Paulo. Seu trabalho é mostrado em exposições individuais (“Holanda Hoje”, São Paulo; Galerie Gutschmidt; Cecile van Eeden, Holanda) e coletivas (Kas de Alma Blou, Curação; Galeria Sasson, São Paulo, Galeria Année, Holanda; Casa E, Chile; Galeria Virgílio, São Paulo; I Bienal de Joalheria Contemporânea, Lisboa; Museu A Casa, São Paulo), entre outras.
O “Ano dos Anéis”, 2002, exposto numa individual em São Paulo e na Holanda, foi um marco do seu trabalho pela ousadia de fazer um anel por dia pelos 365 dias daquele ano. Desenvolve trabalhos de joalheria contemporânea a partir dos próprios projetos, com outros artistas no Brasil e no exterior, e com o grupo Broca. Abriu uma escola de joalheria contemporânea junto com Alice Floriano e Renata Porto em 2022, Algures, onde leciona e orienta.
“Comecei a fazer joias como meio de expressão para minha criatividade, a necessidade de trabalhar os pensamentos através das minhas mãos, uma busca que tenho desde sempre. Passo meu tempo estudando, lendo, experimentando, escutando, trocando, ensinando e aprendendo, testando meus limites, me surpreendendo com maneiras de traduzir intenções. Também aprendi a respeitar a ideia, o sentimento, permitindo que o tempo e o espaço me mostrem o que é requerido. Sou fascinada pelos desafios, pelo olhar, pelo entorno e principalmente pelas pessoas.
Sendo holandesa, morando em São Paulo, e ter passado vários anos em lugares como Paquistão e Japão, me vejo fortalecida cultural e pessoalmente, enquanto ao mesmo tempo entendendo a fragilidade de viver ‘entre mundos’. Tudo isso termina aparecendo no meu trabalho.”

The “Year of the Rings”, 2002, was a milestone in her work and a personal challenge to make a ring a day for the 365 days of that year. She develops contemporary jewelry works based on her own projects, with other artists in Brazil and abroad, and with the Broca group. She opened a contemporary jewelry school together with Alice Floriano and Renata Porto in 2022, Algures, where she coordinates, teaches and guides students.
“I started making jewelry as a means of expressing my creativity, the need to work thoughts through my hands, a quest that I have always had. I spend my time studying, reading, experimenting, listening, exchanging, teaching and learning, testing my limits, surprising myself with ways to translate intentions. I also learned to respect the idea, the feelings, allowing time and space to show me what is required. I am fascinated by challenges, by seeing and discovering, by the surroundings and mainly by the people.
Being Dutch, living in São Paulo, and having spent several years in places like Pakistan and Japan, I find myself culturally and personally strengthened, while at the same time understanding the fragility of living ‘between worlds’. All of that somehow ends up in my work.”
